저는 일단 영어 버전의 Who is she?
물론 무료 계정의 경우에는 단어를 300개까지밖에 저장할 수 없다는 단점이 있긴 하지만, 초급 수준에서라면 무료 계정으로도 충분하리라고 생각합니다. 300개가 넘어가면 아는 것들을 지워가면서 공부하면 되겠죠. ^^;;;

Hola, ¿le puedo ayudar en algo?
Hello. What can I do for you?
Hola, mi nombre es María.
My name is Maria.
¿Cómo está? Mucho gusto en conocerla.
How do you do? Glad to meet you.
Mucho gusto en conocerlo, también.
Glad to meet you too.
¿Cómo se llama su amiga?
What is your friend's name?
Mi amiga se llama Sandra.
My friend's name is Sandra.
Hello Jane. Hello Sally. Nice to meet both of you.
Hola María y Sandra. Mucho gusto en conocerlas.
2
Estamos buscando a alguien.
We are looking for someone.
¿A quién buscan?
Who are you looking for?
Estoy buscando a mi hermano.
I am looking for my brother.
¿Él vive aquí?
Does he live here?
Yes, I think my brother lives in this building.
¿Quién es su hermano? ¿Cómo se llama?
Who is your brother? Tell me his name.
Mi hermano se llama Jorge.
My brother's name is George.
¿Quién es mayor, usted o su hermano?
Who is older, you or your brother?
My brother is older than me. I am younger than him. He is the oldest child in the family.
Which one of you is taller, you or your brother?
My brother is taller. I am the short one in the family. Why do you ask?
3
I just want to know. Now I know who you mean. Your brother looks like you. He lives on the fifth floor.
¿Vive alguien con mi hermano?
Does anyone live with my brother?
Sí.
Yes.
¿Con quién vive?
Who lives with my brother?
Él vive con una muchacha
There is a girl who lives with your brother.
¿Quién es ella? Por favor, dígame algo sobre ella.
Who is she? Please tell me about her.
I cannot tell you who she is. Why don't you ask your brother?
Quiero saber quien es ella. Tengo curiosidad de saber quien es ella.
I want to know who she is. I wonder who she is.
I am sorry I cannot tell you who she is. Your brother will tell you if he wants to.
I am sure you know but just don't want to tell me.
Yo no tengo porque decirle. No creo que sea correcto.
I do not have to tell you. I do not think I should tell you.
Debería decirme.
But you could tell me if you wanted to. You must tell me.
4
¿Por qué tendría que decirle? No creo que sea correcto.
Why do I have to tell you? I do not think it is right.
Bueno, entonces descríbame cómo es ella.
OK. What does the girl look like?
Why are you asking all these questions?
Descríbame cómo es ella. ¿Es alta o es pequeña? ¿Tiene el pelo claro u oscuro?
What does the girl look like? Is she tall or short? Is she fair or dark?
You really want me to tell you about her. I have told you all I want to say.
Well please try to tell me a little more about her.
Well, she is shorter than you but taller than Sally. She is also a little darker than me.
¿Qué hace ella? ¿En dónde trabaja?
What does she do? Where does she work?
She works downtown. I think she works in a department store.
¿Cómo se llama ella?
What is her name?
No puedo decirle el nombre de ella.
I cannot tell you what her name is.
Usted no me esta ayudando mucho. Ayúdeme por favor.
You are not helping me very much. I really need your help.
5
Why do you ask so many questions about the girl living with your brother?
He has not answered my emails for many weeks. I think I know the reason why.
Why? Maybe he is just busy. He is probably too busy to write to you.
I think it is because he is in love with this girl.
¿Por qué dice eso? ¿Cómo lo sabe?
Why do you say that? How do you know?
¿Por qué lo digo?
Why do I say that?
Sí, ¿por qué lo dice?
Yes, why do you say that?
Antes nos escribíamos todo el tiempo. Nos enviábamos correos electrónicos cada semana. Ahora él dejo de escribirme.
We used to write each other all the time. We sent emails to each other every week. He stopped writing me.
¿Y qué con eso? Seguramente tiene otras cosas que hacer.
So what? He probably has other things to do.
Últimamente no se nada de él. No me ha escrito en mucho tiempo.
Now I never hear from him. He no longer writes to me
6
Tal vez él perdió su correo electrónico. Eso puede pasar.
Maybe he lost your email address. This can happen.
Why do you think he has stopped writing to me?
How should I know why he has stopped writing to you?
I am sure the girl is the reason why.
There could be other reasons why he does not write.
¿Como qué por ejemplo?
Like what for example?
Maybe your brother is angry with you for some reason.
No hay ninguna razón para enojarse. Al menos no un buen motivo.
That is no reason. At least it is not a good reason.
There could be many different reasons why he does not write to you.
¿Por qué dice que hay varias razones?
Why do you say that there are many reasons?
Solamente estoy tratando de ayudar. No necesita preocuparse tanto por él.
I am just trying to help. You need not worry about him.
7
Yo no estoy preocupada por mi hermano. Solamente me interesa saber qué esta pasando.
I am not worried about my brother. I am interested in knowing what is going on.
Yo no sé por qué él no le ha escrito.
Well, the thing is, I do not know why he does not write you.
Pero yo quiero que me ayude. Es por eso que vine aquí hoy.
But I want you to help me. That is why I came here today.
¿Pero cómo puedo ayudarla? No puedo contestar todas sus preguntas.
How can I help you? I cannot answer all your questions.
¿Por qué no? Esto es muy importante para mí.
Why not? This is very important for me as you will find out.
Well, in my opinion, you are asking questions about things that are none of your business.
¿Por qué no es asunto mío?
Why is it not my business?
This is your brother's place. He leads his own life. He is on his own.
Pero él es mi hermano. Me preocupo por lo que le pasa.
But he is my brother. I care about what happens to him.
8
Why is it your business if your brother has a girl friend?
Tengo mis razones.
I have my reasons.
Maybe the girl just lives in the apartment.
Yo pienso que hay más que eso.
I think there is more to it than that.
Maybe she just shares in the rent and is not his girlfriend.
No creo eso.
I do not believe that.
It is quite common today for people to just live together.
¿Ella es bonita?
Is the girl pretty?
Sí, de hecho es muy bonita. Incluso diría que es hermosa.
Yes, in fact she is very pretty. I would even say she is beautiful.
9
¿Cuándo se mudó la muchacha al apartamento?
When did the girl move into the apartment?
Déjeme pensar. No lo recuerdo.
Let me see. I cannot remember.
Trate de recordar, por favor.
Please try to remember.
Estoy tratando de recordar.
I am trying to remember.
¿Más o menos cuándo fue esto? Necesito saber.
Roughly when was it? I need to know.
It seems to me that she moved into the apartment about two years ago.
¿Está seguro?
Are you sure?
Yes. In fact it is her apartment. The apartment belongs to her.
¿El apartamento es de ella? ¡Qué sorpresa!
It is the girl's apartment? What a surprise!
Sí, recuerdo cuando ella se mudó aquí. Fue en noviembre. Ese día estaba nevando
Yes. I remember when she moved in. It was November. It was snowing that day.
¿Está seguro?
Are you sure?
Yes. Your brother just moved in six months ago.
Really? How do you know when my brother moved in?
I remember that it was late at night and it was raining.
¿Por qué recuerda ese día?
Why did you notice him?
He made a lot of noise. He had friends who helped him move. They all made a lot of noise.
10
Do you mean they have lived together for half a year? They must be boyfriend and girlfriend.
No tengo ni idea. ¿Cuándo dejó su hermano de escribirle?
I have no idea. When did your brother stop writing to you?
Él dejó de escribirme hace sólo algunas semanas.
It has only been a few weeks since he stopped writing.
You see. It is not because of this girl that he stopped writing emails to you.
That is true I guess. He wrote me regularly until a few weeks ago. So why did he stop then?
Well let's try to figure out what happened. How often did he email you?
Es difícil de decir. Pero él me escribía con frecuencia.
That is hard to say. He wrote quite often.
¿Y usted siempre le respondía los correos?
Did you always answer him?
Sí, yo respondía cuanto antes.
I would always try to answer him as soon as possible.
Pero, ¿cuántas veces usted no le respondió?
But how many times did you not answer him?
It depended on how much work I had to do.
¿Se escribían siempre por correo electrónico?
You always wrote by email?
Yes we kept in touch by email. I did not need to know where he lived.
How many emails did you get from him every month?
Yo recibía muchos correos al mes. Siempre me emocionaba recibir sus correos.
I got lots of email every month. I was always excited to get his emails.
¿Por qué no trató de visitarlo antes?
Why did you not try to visit him before?
Yo estaba ocupada.
I was busy. Besides, I thought he was still away at school.
11
How did you find out that your brother lived here?
A friend said that he lived here. A friend told me where he lived. A friend gave me his address.
Y usted, ¿en dónde vive?
Where do you live?
I live in my parents' house in another town. The house where I live belongs to my parents.
Por cierto, ¿en dónde parqueó su carro?
By the way, where did you park your car?
I parked around the corner. There was no place to park nearer here.
Did you park on the right side of the street or on the left side of the street?
I parked on the left side of the street just in front of the school.
¿Parqueó junto a un camión grande?
Did you park beside the large truck?
Sí así fue, ¿por qué?
Yes I did, why?
No está permitido parquear ahí. La ciudad está arreglando las calles.
You are not allowed to park there. The city is fixing the road there.
Por favor espéreme mientras muevo mi carro. Ya regreso, tengo más preguntas para hacerle.
I will go and move my car. Please wait for me I have some more questions.
12
OK but I am busy. You had better hurry.
Espere por favor. Necesito su ayuda.
Please wait. I really need you to help me.
I cannot spend the whole day just answering your questions.
I do not care if I get a parking ticket. I want you to help me. What if
it were your brother? You would be in the same situation as me.
Bueno. La entiendo, ¿qué quiere saber?
Well, get to the point. What do you want to know?
¿Qué pensaría si le doy 100 dólares? ¿Me diría qué hacen ellos?
What if I gave you one hundred dollars? Would you help me find out more about what my brother and his room-mate are doing?
¿Quiere que yo los espíe? No voy a hacer eso.
You want me to spy on your brother? No I will not do that. It is not fair to your brother.
Y si le doy 500 dólares, ¿lo haría?
What if I give you 500 dollars, would you do it then?
Bueno, eso es diferente. No debería, pero por 500 dólares podría hacerlo.
That is a different story. Of course I really should not do it, but for 500 dollars I might be willing to do it.
Good! Now I know the kind of person I am dealing with.
¿Qué quiere decir con eso? ¿Todavía quiere mi ayuda?
What do you mean by that? Do you want my help or not?
Por supuesto que aún quiero su ayuda.
Yes I want your help.
13
Debe darme los 500 dólares ahora mismo.
But you must give me the 500 dollars right now.
¿Me acepta un cheque?
What if I just gave you a check for 500 dollars? Would you accept that?
Bueno. Escriba el cheque a mi nombre. ¿De qué banco es el cheque?
OK. Write me a check and I will do what you say. Which bank is the check written on?
Del Banco Nacional.
The First National Bank.
Nunca he oído hablar de ese banco.
I have never heard of that bank.
It is a famous bank in my country.
You know, I have thought it over again. On second thoughts I do not want to do what you ask.
Pero si ya había aceptado.
But you just said you would a little earlier.
You are asking me to do something which is not honest.
Pero si antes había aceptado hacerlo.
But you agreed at first.
Even though I said I would, I have now changed my mind.
14
¿Pero cuál es el problema? Podría ganar mucho dinero sin mucho esfuerzo.
What is your problem? You can make money without doing very much.
No quiero hacerlo. No es correcto.
I just do not want to do it. I do not feel it is right.
Why, because it is dishonest, or because you do not trust the bank?
Eso no importa.
Never mind.
¿Qué es esto? Deje de mostrarse tan honesto.
Which is it? Stop pretending that you are so honest.
Let's say I that do not trust the bank. But I am also an honest person.
I mean you were ready to help me for 500 dollars cash, after all.
Sí, pero ahora no quiero ayudarle. Además estoy ocupado.
There is no way I'm going to help you. You might as well give up and leave. I am busy.
Just a minute here! Let me tell you something which will make you change your mind.
I doubt that anything you say will make a difference. Whatever you say will not make me change my mind.
¿Qué tal si le ofrezco más dinero?
How about if I give you more money?
Aunque no parezca, yo soy honesto.
Money will not make me change my mind. I might not look like it but I am an honest person.
15
¿Cuánto dinero quiere?
How much money do you want?
¿Cuántas veces debo decirle que no voy a ayudarle?
How many times do I need to tell you that I will not help you?
OK I will tell you the truth.
¿Cuál es la verdad?
Now it comes out.
My brother has just received a lot of money from a relative who died.
¿Y qué tiene que ver eso conmigo?
What has that got to do with me?
I want to make sure that he is not married or living in a relationship with this girl.
¿Por qué eso le importa tanto?
Why does it matter to you?
I do not want the girl to get any of this money. Therefore I need your help.
Even if they are living together I do not think that this gives her the right to share in the money.
What do you know about things like that? You are certainly no lawyer
16
¿Es usted abogado?
Are you a lawyer?
Yes I am. I want to find a way to make my brother leave this girl before he gets the money.
That is not very nice of you. Why are you so interested in what happens to your brother?
Porque así tendré más dinero para mí.
That way I get more of the money for myself.
Ahora entiendo.
Now I see. I am glad I do not have a sister like you.
Si me ayuda, yo podría darle mil dólares.
I can give you one thousand dollars if you help me.
What if your brother finds out that I am helping you?
No se preocupe. Igual usted tendrá su dinero.
You don't have to worry about it. You will still have the money I give you.
What if your brother is in love with the girl?
Eso no me importa.
It does not matter to me. In any case we will see what happens.
Eso puede ser un problema.
This smells like trouble to me.
No olvide que voy a darle mucho dinero.
I can give you a lot of money.
17
Está bien, acepto ayudarla. Espero no meterme en problemas.
OK then, I agree to help you. I just hope it does not cause problems for me.
De todos modos tendrá su dinero.
You will get your money in any case.
Maybe your brother is not in love with her, maybe he will be happy to get rid of her.
I hope so. That would certainly make things a lot easier.
Entonces, ¿qué quiere que haga?
So what do you want me to do?
First of all, give me his phone number.
I can't do that. Why do you want his phone number? You can email him and ask him yourself.
Yo
no puedo preguntárselo.
I can't ask him. I want Sally to start telephoning him when he is not
home. She is going to pretend to be his old girl friend when the girl
he lives with answers the phone.
Ahora veo lo que está planeando. A usted le gusta causar problemas.
Now I see what you are up to. You are a real trouble maker.
I think it will upset her. But here is the big favour I need from you.
I want you to let Sally into their apartment when they are both away.
No estoy seguro que pueda hacer eso.
I am not sure I can do that.
18
I want my brother's girl friend to come home and find Sally in their bed.
¿Está hablando en serio o está bromeando?
Are you serious? You must be joking!
No, es en serio. Quiero avergonzar a mi hermano.
No I am serious. I want to embarrass my brother.
Finding Sally in his bed could cause him embarrassment. There is no doubt about that.
That will be very difficult for my brother to explain.
Estoy de acuerdo. Pobre de su hermano.
I would agree. That would be hard to explain. I would not want to have
to explain that. Even if she loves him, that will be really difficult
to explain.
Espero que así ella decida dejarlo. Entonces yo tendré más dinero para mí.
I hope she decides to leave him and I will keep more of the money.
That much I understand. You are not a very nice sister.
No importa.
Never mind. Just do what I say and you will get the money.
19
Está bien, haré lo que me pide. No debería pero lo haré.
Ok I will do what you want. I really shouldn't but I will.
Estaba pensando… ¿hay alguien en casa de ellos ahora?
Hey. I just thought of something. Is anyone home right now?
No, los dos están afuera. ¿Qué insinúa?
No they are both out. What do you mean by that?
¿A qué hora regresan?
When will they be back?
He will be back late tonight. He is playing golf with his friends.
¿Y ella?
What about her?
She should be back from work in an hour from now.
We have one hour before the girl comes back.
¿Qué quiere decir? No me gusta lo que está insinuando.
What do you mean? I don't like what I am hearing.
Don't worry. Just leave it to me. Everything will be all right.
Espere un minuto. No me gusta lo que esta planeando.
I know what you are thinking and I don't like it one bit. Just wait a minute.
20
Tenemos que actuar rápido. Deje entrar a Sandra al apartamento ahora mismo.
No! Let's act quickly. Let's get Sally into the apartment right away.
No puedo hacer eso. Jorge me va a matar.
But I cannot do that. George will kill me!
Sure you can. You will get your money right away.
Entonces deme el dinero ahora.
Show me the money now. Give me the money now.
You will get your money. First show me which floor the apartment is on again? Which floor is it?
I told you the apartment is on the fifth floor. But wait a minute. I cannot do this. Where is my money?
The elevator is right over there. Let's go Sally. Come on and show us the way and you will get your money. I promise.
Just press the top button. There are only five floors in this building.
Está bien, subamos.
Ok. Let's get in and go up.
Gee. I am not sure this is worth it. It might cost me my job.
No se preocupe tanto. Sólo piense en su dinero.
Don't worry. Just think about your money.
21
¿Cuál es el apartamento?
Which is the door to their apartment?
It is the second door on the left, the one with the green door. It is down that way.
Apurémonos. Déjenos entrar por favor.
Let's hurry up. Quickly let us in.
¿Qué van a hacer? ¿Y dónde esta mi dinero? Lo quiero ahora.
What are you going to do? And where is my money. I want my money now.
Sally, get into your pyjamas and get into bed.
Por Dios, vamos a tener problemas. Yo mejor me voy.
Oh boy, this is going to be trouble. I am leaving.
I hear someone coming down the hall.
Yo mejor me voy. Adiós
I am not staying around here. Good bye.
Oh no. He said the girl would not come back for an hour. I guess she came back early.
I do not care what happens. I just want to embarrass my brother and break up his relationship with this girl.
?????
22
¿Qué está pasando aquí?
What is going on here in my apartment?
Hola, yo soy María y ella es Sandra. Mucho gusto en conocerla.
Hello. My name is Jane and this is Sally. Glad to meet you.
¿Qué están haciendo en mi apartamento?
What are you doing in my apartment?
I am George's sister. This is Sally, my friend.
No me interesa saber quienes son ustedes. ¿Qué están haciendo aquí? ¿Quién las dejó entrar?
I don't care who you are. What are you doing here? Who let you in?
You do not have to get upset. After all, I am George's sister. I am not a stranger.
Why is Sally wearing pyjamas and lying in bed?
Puedo explicarlo. Es que Sandra esta muy cansada.
I can explain. You see Sally was feeling tired and...
¿Cómo entraron a mi apartamento?
How did you get in to my apartment?
The man from downstairs let me in because I asked him to. He is a nice man.
He did? What right has he to let you in here? Please tell me why your
friend Sally is in bed with her pyjamas on in the afternoon.
I started to tell you. She is tired and just wanted to sleep a little before George came home.
23
¿No deberían pedir permiso antes?
Since when can people just go and sleep in someone's bed when they are tired? Shouldn't they ask for permission?
No teníamos a quien preguntarle.
There was nobody here to ask. Why does it bother you so much? Are you George's girl friend? Is that why?
No I am not George's girl friend if you must know. I am George's language student.
¿Está bromeando? ¿Él es solamente su profesor de español? No me diga mentiras.
Are you kidding me? You are George's language student? You can't fool me.
No estoy mintiendo. Jorge me ha estado ayudando a aprender español.
No I mean it. George has been helping me learn English.
Pero usted habla muy bien español. No le creo que sea una estudiante.
But you speak English very well. I do not believe you are his student.
Well I am, or rather I was. When I first came here I could not speak very well.
And just by living with George you learned to speak so well? He helped you that much?
I do not just speak well, I also write well and have no trouble reading difficult books.
¿Pero cuál es su secreto? ¿Cómo aprendió a hablar español tan bien?
So how did you learn? What is the secret?
24
You see, George is a tutor with The Linguist online language system.
No le entiendo.
I do not understand.
Él me mostró cómo aprender español con (LingQ), The Linguist. Esto me ayudó mucho
He showed me how to learn on The Linguist. That is what really helped me.
You mean The Linguist system helped you even more than living with George?
Well they both helped me, but The Linguist is what really helped me.
No le creo, y aun no entiendo bien.
I do not believe you. I don't get it.
Jorge,
George made me understand that the way I was learning English was
wrong. I was too concerned about grammar. I was too afraid to make
mistakes. I was too worried about being embarrassed.
But don't you need to know grammar to speak well?
No,
yo me di cuenta que si disfrutaba aprendiendo español, entonces no
importaba cometer errores.
No. I started to realize that if I enjoyed learning English, it did not
matter if I made mistakes. Making mistakes would not embarrass me.
Making mistakes was a part of learning.
¿Entonces cómo aprendió español?
So how did you learn?
Jorge
George told me to just listen and read a lot and to save words and
phrases on The Linguist. That is when I started to enjoy the language.
That is when I started to really improve my English.
Just by not thinking of grammar you actually started to speak better?
Yes. I had to forget what I had been taught at school for so many years.
25
I cannot remember much of what I learned at school either. In my case there is not too much to forget.
Yo
tampoco.
Me too! But the way I learned languages at school made me hate learning
languages. It made me resist the language I was learning.
I am sure that is true for many people.
Yes. People have to learn to enjoy the language. People have to stop resisting the language and take it in naturally.
Veo que eso le funciono a usted.
Well I guess it really worked for you.
Oh yes. George taught me that so I let him stay in my apartment.
Entonces no se pudo resistir a mi hermano.
So you did not resist George either?
¿Que insinúa? Él es sólo mi amigo. Nosotros no dormimos en la misma cama.
What are you trying to say? He is not my boy friend. We did not share the same bed!
It was nice of you to let him stay in your apartment.
Eso
también ha sido bueno para mí. Yo tengo conversación gratis en español,
en el desayuno y en la cena. Algunas veces vamos juntos a fiestas.
It was good for me. I had free English conversation with him at
breakfast and at dinner. We would sometimes go to parties together.
I guess that helped your English.
Yes, but now I want him to leave. I do not need him any more. Besides he is getting on my nerves.
¿Por qué dice eso? ¿Por qué no quiere vivir con él?
Why do you say that? Why do you not want him around any more?
He is so messy. He does not clean up after himself. He leaves dirty clothes lying around
26
Are there any other reasons why you want George to leave?
Yes, I have a new boyfriend who does not like me living with George.
Good. Your new boy friend is right.
¿Por qué se alegra tanto? ¿Por qué es eso tan importante?
Why is that good? Why does it matter to you?
No importa.
Never mind. That is my little secret. Anyway, thanks for letting us visit you and thanks for your help.
No sé qué decirle.
I am not sure what to say. You have a lot of nerve. But I am always happy to help people by telling them about The Linguist.
No, that is not how you helped me. You have helped me for another reason that has to do with George. Never mind.
Ah
bueno.
But Jane, you should learn languages. You would do very well. You are very determined and you are not easily embarrassed.
You know I have always wanted to travel and meet people from other countries. Maybe you are right.
At The Linguist they think everybody can learn to speak several
languages. They think that it need not be difficult. People just have
to stop learning the way they did at school and start learning in a
more natural way.
Boy, you sure are keen on The Linguist.
Claro
You should try it and you will see why. You will start enjoying your
language. If you enjoy learning you will learn better. You will not
resist the language. You will find learning a language an exciting and
rewarding adventure. I do.
